Muhammad’s Mother in Sohag

"I got my son with mental retardation and spinal problems, and I went to many doctors, and I was hoping that he would improve, but Muhammad did not speak or walk. I was sitting imagining how his voice would be, and for hours I was sitting imagining that I was hearing Muhammad's voice and I was imagining his voice while he was hilarious and annoyed. At that time, all that I hoped for was to speak with my son. My husband is blind and I know how to talk to him normally.

The last doctor I went to said, "leave him at home... May God take care of him" I can't describe what I was feeling at the time. I went home and sat crying while I was hugging my husband, with no hope that he would improve.

Two years ago, I heard that in a new center was opened, I didn't understand what it was doing exactly, but I understood that it accepted cases like my son Muhammad. My husband used to say "Don't go if the doctors said there is no hope, what this center will do? I don't want you to be upset again, but I was desperate anyway, so I carried Muhammad on my back and went, and all the way I was preparing myself for disappointment that they would not accept him or they would tell me what the other doctor said.

We went and they did tests for Muhammad and told me to bring him to take two sessions per week. We have been going on treatment for two years up to now. You will not believe how Muhammad is now. I myself cannot believe it. My son, who was like a doll, unable to walk or speak, has become able to walking alone, and finally I heard the word mama from him, I hold his hand while he understands the meaning of the hand hold.  Muhammad knows how to enter the bathroom and rinse, and also started to hold a pen and color. I am now applying for him to enrol in the integration school in the village, and we are all happy at home that he will go to school.

Mohamed didn't need a doctor to treat him, but he needed rehabilitation and physiotherapy sessions to develop his skills and deal with how to speak and express. He just needed someone to help him and help us so that our lives would have meaning again and we feel that we are really living."
